Summer 2022 is here - who's been flying?

Recommended Posts

I had a good days flying yesterday, I finally maidened my JB Aviation DH 71 tiger Moth racer and despite being a tad tail heavy she flew well once trimmed out, the pilot did try to help by removing the number "7" from the fin, not the best decals as the others were coming adrift as well. I also flew my Premier DH 82 Tiger Moth, now 16 years old as well as my Bi-stormer. Thanks to our club chairman Ian for the flying shots.DSC02717.thumb.JPG.1dd1e4e4fc7d007c233f55d88351e8d1.JPG

I had a belting day's flying yesterday. I went out with the intension of a maiden flight for my new Durafly DeHavilland Vampire, but the building wind was just the wrong orientation for a maiden, leading to a take off run towards the gate which had seen off a couple of other EDFs in the past , giving a large dose of bad juju and halting that option. 😄

Instead I just enjoyed flying some of the other models that I had with me and really enjoyed the day. My pal Derek obliged with some smashing flying shots of my fairly new Flightline FW190A, which looked brilliant in the sunshine and clouds. I'm still a bit flap shy after the Zero, but the Butcher Bird managed some very satisfying flap less landings.

Frustrating weekend from a wind direction and intensity point of view, plus a couple of technical issues conspired to knock the edge off a long weekend.

On the positive side, flew the Focke Stick a couple of times, Outlaw, Woohoo and trainer (with student) with only minor excitement. One thing that is noticeable with the Outlaw is the amount of sky it takes up when passing, climbing and descending into a fast pass all at WOT....

The Focke Stick was videoed and I was hoping someone would video the Outlaw as it was the first launch with safe on + it was meant to be a comparison on speed. Anyway its worth a watch just for the launch as the Focke Sick as it has counter rotating props and does not need much of a chuck! More a let go before leaving with the model!

Maiden flight today of my Chiltern models Seafury, it has a new Stinger 30cc petrol engine and a load of lead up front, After reading reports that they don't fly very well I finally bit the bullet and opened the throttle, what an anti climax , it tracked straight and lifted off half way down the strip, bags of power it only needed two clicks of right aileron, after a few circuits I slowed it down for a slow pass, slight wing drop but easily picked up. Then after another circuit the engine faded and I had to come in dead stick, I managed to land on the strip with the wheels up as the outfield is very rough, no damage. As the wind was getting stronger I called it a day. I will give the engine a bit more running time before flying it again. I had some good flying with the Pacer behind it earlier on, only two of us flying today, must be a bank holiday or something, but then again most members are set in a routine of Tuesdays and Thursdays,

I have been fiddling with my 20 year old Futura, own designed and built  Bell 222 fuselage (epoxy ) modified to flybarless when the flybarless heads came out,

and microbeast, which has always been a headache, finally properly installed ( it does not like methanol generated vibrations ) and regulated, fast low passes loops and rolls,,,all that with a new mix of fuel, a real problème over here.

And yes 41Mhz  and Mode 2.

Flew my Priory models Silhouette and had the maiden flight on my larger KI-61, i have just converted this to electric on 3s having bought it last year, i think it was built from the old Micro Mold kit, it flew very nicely. That is my 2nd KI-61 maiden in a week, the other one which i built from the Chris Golds plan has a build thread on the forum.

Out again this afternoon - on my own for all but 30 mins.

Put another half dozen flights on the Double Trouble - it's a real hoot! So much so that I'll probably not bother fixing my foamy Wots Wot and retire it after 700+ flights...

Highly recommend the DT - assembles well, flies nicely, and fits in the car in one piece. I think 10cc ic is my current 'sweet spot'!

  • 1 month later...

Possibly the wrong thread now, but...... I have!

Been glorious up here on the East coast: 5 degrees when I arrived at 9:00, 20 when I left at 15:30; very light Westerly breeze; wall to wall blue sky.... flew my Valiant, Double Trouble, Hawk and Riot. Ate bbq Hula Hoops, drank coffee, and chatted with some chums. We even mowed the runways!

Best day for ages!
