martin collins 1
Got 5 flights in yesterday between these two, my 2nd Bi-Stormer was maidend, lovely flier on an SC70 4 stroke. The wind dropped right away to nothing as the sun got very low in the sky, reflecting off the yellow on the model as it pottered around in low circuits and curled over the top of loops. A very satisfying evenings flying 😊. Going back today as the wind is forecast to be low again, may grab the 1/4 scale Triplane for a few sorties.
Chris Walby
Apologies for the late arrive of Ron's camera work, but they are of very high picture quality so too some time to load on to youtube! Anyway, first off Ron's walk around the club pits Next up the maiden (technically a re-maiden as it has flown, but not by me or with Laser FT310. Needed quite a bit of right trim and a bit of up. Landing called early due to starboard engine lean misfire. Perhaps due to having to hold a bit of up in I didn't hold the flair and it bounced, but for a first ever landing of this model and one over 20Kg its a good result. mechanically adjusted the outer starboard flap and re-tuned the engine for the next flight. Skip to 3:15 if you don't want the start up! And the second maiden Gear doors, and UC pin needs some work + the pesky glow plug clips. 7 minute flight and used 32 oz of fuel so that's £4 for all that excitement not bad when it takes £110 to fill the van up! Still none the wiser who built or what plan/kit it came from, but I believe that Nick Moss and Colin Straus were owners at some point. If anyone has any info please let me know, cheers

Yes, RDV the 18th, thanks, I missed out on a fantastic afternoon at the slope, 24° and a southern breeze, our club president mixed up the dates ! payneib
Another proud dad day today. The eldest had the decision for a day out, or to spend more time on CL tuition/racing with the guys doing CL Nats this weekend, he chose to stay at Buckminster and fly. He had his first flights on a racer, unfortunately attempts to activate the fuel cut off caused a couple of minor crashes, all fixed now but not in time to register a race time and be declared Junior Champ by default, so he carried on with the CL Trainer (I'm searching Outerzone for the plan now, we need a couple of those!). I got trained up in the operation of PAW diesels and CL race pitman duties (even through an old suade/nomex navy firefighters glove, I've got a black finger nail now), and had more training flights. The wife even got involved, and managed a couple of flights! And to everyone's delight, my youngest (5) managed to pull off a near complete solo on his first attempt! (Having a nightmare with videos because I don't want to sit next to the reception door and use the WiFi 😂)
Peter Jenkins
Always felt that C/L was a great way into aeromodelling for youngsters. It's relatively cheap, and these days uses electric motors so overcomes the problem of the snarling 2 stroke noise. It can be flown in small spaces and gives a huge amount of fun for the money involved. It's also the only type of model flying where you are connected to the controls directly. As you can imagine, I cut my teeth on C/L as an impecunious teenager. I could get to the flying field with up to 3 models on my push bike! GrumpyGnome
Great news Mr P. You may have stumbled upon the reason your eldest seems less keen on the Bixler/J60 - children seem to take tuition better from non-parents! Or maybe he prefers the direct contact of c/l. Do we all have a little c/l history? Well, us older ones! Phantom, Phantom Mite, Radian, Warlord, Champ....... and I think there was a Mercury kit in there somewhere.... apart from the Warlord, all far too heavy with coloured dope, and Humbrol enamel.
Futura57
Definitely a firm C/L history for me. Pictures of some of mine in here...

Nick Cripps
I had a great day's flying yesterday, and even scored a hat-trick! The morning was spent at the "old" field where I flew my latest acquisition, a Graham Dorschell-designed depron Vulcan. Lovely flyer but the ESC kept getting hot and bothered so will require upgrading (or maybe I'll have to figure out a way to get a decent flow of cooling air through the fuselage). Next up was a bit of free-flight, with the Smoke Trail and Tomboy getting an airing. Then it was home for lunch, swap some models out and into the car, and off to the "new" field for the afternoon/evening to meet up with some of my longer-standing club mates for a bit of a Nationals reminiscence where we flew a few control-line and free-flight models. I used to fly control-line when I joined the club 50 years ago as a junior member. I had a break for a few years for the usual interests until my late twenties when I rejoined and carried on where I'd left off - flying control-line. Interest in CL waned over the next couple of years so I moved on to RC and have only flown CL on odd occasions since the mid-90s. The 1/2A combat wing I bought at least 10 years ago but I had only had a brief attempt with it last year. This was not terribly successful as the 50ft lines I borrowed were too much for it. I'd spent a couple of hours the previous day making up some more suitably-sized lines which were much better although it seemed a bit light on line tension. The Superstar was built by club mate Terry McDonald around 35 years ago and was a model I'd flown many times at club displays. Terry gave it to me when he became deeply involved in vintage team-racing and no longer had the interest in aerobatics himself. I got a bit dizzy but managed to avoid crashing either model, although I came close once or twice! I chose not to risk my FF models this time as the River Trent runs along the western edge of the field and, even though the wind was light, it was from the east. Of course, the inevitable happened to Paul... ... but he had the foresight to bring along an inflatable canoe for just such an event and successfully completed the rescue mission: Yann was not so fortunate and his model drifted clear across the river before disappearing behind the trees on the far bank. A quick search before dark failed to find the model but plans were being made to use a drone to search amongst the brambles and nettles today. All in all though we had a great day and finished it off with a curry in the nearby town. Hat-trick? Free-flight, control-line and RC all in the same day - it doesn't get any better than that!
leccyflyer
Busy with domestic duties this weekend, so only managed just a couple of hours at the local field today, but got a few flights in with some old favourites. Might get another couple of hours tomorrow morning if the rain holds off.
martin collins 1
6 flights on one of my Flair DR1`s yesterday, perfect weather for it with a light breeze 6 perfect landings as well, if you have flown one of these 1/4 scale Tripes you will know that is not always the case! I`ve found it`s sweet spot for landing, Absolute minimum throttle it will tick over on for landing, directly into wind, NO aileron input once on the ground rudder for all corrections, and make sure you have enough up elevator movement for a slow landing. I enjoy flying this model so much, i take it when ever the conditions are suitable, trouble is it takes up most of my car leaving only enough space for a 52" sized single wing general all weather type flyer just in case the wind gets up.

payneib
5 hours ago, Nick Cripps said: Hat-trick? Free-flight, control-line and RC all in the same day - it doesn't get any better than that! I managed the same today. Dermatitis woke me up at very early o'clock, so I was out at dawn with my very wobbly VMC Sopwith Triplane, and managed three reasonable flights at 350 winds before a glue joint broke at the bottom wing root. So I took the Junior 60 out whilst the CL crowd were still asleep, and used the 1/4 of the runway that wasn't marked out with cone circles (still more than twice the field I'm used to) to run down my last charged battery. And once the engines were allowed to run, I had a quick go at CL Carrier Deck on the foam board trainers they bring for people to try. After three years drafted to a carrier a decade ago, I finally managed to fly off one three times, even if I didn't get as far as landing back on one. 😂 And all that before setting off for a family outing to Belvoir Castle.

leccyflyer
Blowy, cold and overcast this morning - wooly hat, two coats and gloves weather, with a black sky. Managed to get a few flights in though, even under those conditions, but I'd suggest that perhaps we might be getting to the time to move to the Autumn Thread. Nick Cripps
The old autumn thread is still locked so I'll just have to post on here... Another great day's waterplane flying yesterday at Kitridding Farm near Kirby Lonsdale. We had the odd spot of drizzle here and there but not enough to bother us, and the wind was calm all day making it probably the best conditions of the year for our fortnightly visit to this beautiful location in the Lake District. It's electric only at this site so the seven members present brought along the usual array of foamies: Rangers, Skippers, Timbers, Icons and the like. We all had plenty of flying from 9:30 in the morning right up to 7pm, with a break for the usual excellent lunch of pie & chips in the farm restaurant. Here's a couple of photos of the Skippers and Timbers which @Merry Mark and I enjoyed flying together. Hopefully Mark will be along later with his usual selection of super photos showing more of the day's events, including the odd mishap!
