Never mind the weather - who has been flying, then?

Just the 2 of us today but I was able to re-maiden the 3D printed Fox which flew a lot better now that I have adjusted the control throws. Unfortunately on landing there was an audible ‘click’ as the fuse split again but this time not on a joint it was above the spar and was caused by the force of the nose pushing the fuselage down with the landing gear providing the fulcrum point. Once again no additional strengthening was incorporated into the design but it’s a simple fix with 2 strips of carbon tow epoxied to the inside fuselage walls. I also got to fly my Algebra 1000 3m RES glider which I motorised yesterday, the motor choice was simple, it was the only one I had in stock that looked about the right size. It turns out it is a good match.

Decent turn out this afternoon, but the weather conditions changed so much over the few miles and 8 minutes trip - declined wearing my big thermal  suit, as it was bright sunshine and calm. Got to the field an a moderate breeze, swinging about, grey overcast and cold. Crosswind to the runway, but didn't stop the flying and had the usual great laugh with up to six wee fellas in the air at a time. I'm really enjoying the FMS Super Cub as a winter hack, especially on days like today. Hope for more of the same tomorrow morning.

Three of us spent a couple of hours braving the cold to fly in the cold, grey, gloomy skies... Big Wot4, Spacewalker, P51, Extra nnn. Highlight was KP looping his heli-smiles all-round!

Hope it starts to get warmer soon.......

I thought the fuz was Algebra like, although, apparently it is not.

I have also motorised my Algebra, with a Selig section, I think my model is 100" like. I do not fly it mainly as the air brakes were, are operated via a fuz located servo via fishing trace wire. From time to time I have considered putting 9g servos in the wing, then I find a whole set of reasons or difficulties, when I give up.

The weather and the farm track are against me, up here in the North. It has been very wet here, even when not apparently raining. The two Links golf courses are open, the two soil Golf courses are posting closed, not partially open, winter tyres or some holes closed. It could realy be that, now, in my dotage, I am a wimp?

The forecast blue skies and Sun had some 16 people say they would be at the patch at my primary flying site.  However, as I only arrived at 2.10 pm, the morning crowd had gone and the cold was having its effects on others.

The sky was that very awkward pale blue sky making it difficult to maintain good visibility of the model particularly at the top of the box at each end.

On the ground, however, the light allowed a nice clear photograph of my Anthem in the pits.20250202_155009.thumb.jpg.a27c226a0743a587bd10739795c474f9.jpg

Byron and I had great flying on Saturday morning, got to the field around 06:30, no wind and not that hot. When we left around 10 it was very hot at close to 30!

Flew the Spacewalker and had lots of fun trying to land without a bounce. The Tiger Moth was made for those conditions and we put many miles on the wheels with touch and go's. The Stick had the counter rotating unit on it and it was surprising noisy with lots of prop noise. the performance is very good so we need to transplant it into the MB5.  The grass runways are looking great after the rain but are a lot of work to cut as we only have 2 normal push mowers not ride on ones.

Yes, the noise from an electric contra can sound like a well silenced 4 sroke.  Which contra and ESC are you using?

A dozen or maybe fifteen members throughout the day yesterday - sunny with light and variable winds to about three in the afternoon when a gentle breeze began  to increase the windchill and make things uncomfortable on the fingers when out of my heated gloves. Heated underjacket was worth its weight in gold. Scale, sport, leccy and IC, edf and even a couple of turbines were able to get off our well drained strip. Took a couple of 3S aerobats myself - no trouble to get going quickly as both fit in the car assembled and eight batteries give more than enough flying time followed by a quick pack away and departure. A bit soft on our slightly uphill approach track so out with the pressure washer this morning to sort out the wheels and wheel wells on the car.

A great day to break up the dank and dismal past few weeks.

I flew the club's trainer yesterday. It's a well-flown and repaired Boomerang powered by an Enya 50 SS, however, despite several days without rain, the van got stuck in the mud and had to be pulled out by the chairman's 4WD! 😩

Despite the raw wind/cold I did venture out this morning just as the frost was beginning to thaw. I think the moderate wind made the feel like temperature lower than forecast.

I had intended flying my sensor test bed large scale Edge 540, but the conditions really mitigated against it. Instead I gave my winter hack (Sbach342) a blow. I bailed out three quarters of the way through the third flight because despite being well wrapped up I was beginning to shiver. Control was becoming challenging as a result with some of the freestyle aeros much less than perfect. Wednesday looks like a nicer day though ........

Nevertheless, I am glad I made the effort.🥶

Nothing very spectacular for me just the "flapped" FX707 Albatross converted chuck glider.

First flight for me for a full 2 months and not quite as calm as it looked with some quite strong gusts in the otherwise gentle southerly which made slow flying rather tricky..

No damage apart from some mud on landing.

What I did not expect was so much of the field to be flooded.

Even the bits that were not under water were very "squelchy" so the actual operating area was much reduced.

The sudden appearance of the sun at the weekend spurred me on to repair the undercarriage on my Warbird Replicas FW190. Seem to have cracked it this time - several less than perfect landings and still went home in one piece. My favourite plane - can’t really fault it, especially now the landing gear seems reliable!

A lovely crisp morning for flying with a clear blue sky! Time to test the installed Telemetry sensor for Altitude. I already know the Logging is being done on to the micro SD card. At the moment I am researching how to transfer it onto a non-Windows PC in tabular format with the help of DickW of this parish on the forum (the Futaba Logging Converter is only compatible on Windows) . The first thing of importance I learned as the Altitude voice prompts are very useful and indeed on the odd occasion I did stray above the 400 feet the TX advised me straight away. The speech timer is also a boon. I am still in the process of perfecting the trim on my newish 91" Skywing Edge 540 (if that is completely possible). One thing I noticed is that when I come out of an upright bunt and reduce the throttle she has a tendency to float upwards as if I am over compensating one of the controls. Elevator perhaps. The height issue comes to the fore when positioning for an upright or inverted spin. Additionally, this is the case at the top of a stall turn positioning. I need to watch that and reduce the interval between the voice frequency warnings on the Altitude and may be set the warning to come in at 380 feet.

Lots to get used to though.

A productive morning though and she came down safely at the end of the flight 😀

A good turnout of 10 EDMAC members at Epsom Downs race course today. I now have four GNB 4S 4500mAh HV Lipos , so I had four great flights of my Strange Quark (silver twin finned 70mm EDF jet) of nearly 5 minutes each. At one time I went for a full speed downwind descent, only to experience a severe fluttering of the diamond wings. I shall employ thicker stiffer wings for my 90mm EDF version. If only I could persuade someone to take some flying shots for me, before my luck runs out. I also dusted off my rarely flown silver USAF schemed Top Quark. Hardly flown since last year's RCM&E plan article photo shoot. Sadly, there were three totalled models (not mine). Two with cause unknown, one with wrong model memory.

A good selection of WW1 models at the club field today with an ASP 160 Twin powered Hannibal, a Four stroke SE5a, and my Puppeteer and Baronette Triplane both electric powered, the Pup on 4s and the DR1 on 3s. SpottyDog the Tripe got through it`s maiden flight with no issues and i pulled off a greaser landing in the gusty conditions which was very satisfying, just got to wait for some warmer weather to get a scale type paint scheme on it.
