  1. Well the Hurricane fix up is finally completed. Applying the markings by airbrush and CNC cut vinyl masks took forever, with six colours and three mist coats of each, cleaning the brush between each coat. I'm quite pleased with the results, which worked fine with just a few wee glitches. With that done I set to with adding some panel lines, using my favoured method of HB pencil, accentuated with light grey water soluble artist's pencil prior to a little light weathering with pencil dust applied with the fingers and some localised aluminium dry brushing. Finally locked all that in place with a mist coat of matt WBPU varnish applied with the airbrush. Got the model all dialled into the transmitter today, added the radio antenna wire, set the control throws and sorted the velcro seatbelt for the 3s1p 3200mah pack. Add the prop and spinner for a final check of CG and with the battery in place and secured that is spot on, as per the plan, with no additional ballast needed. Just need the weather for a maiden flight now -and the bench is clear. 😎

  2. Starting to skin the fuselage in the “Flitetest” style. Material is 6mm insulation foam, and it’s going to be pretty rough! Hoping it will look OK in the air some distance away…

  5. Well you could get your schedule back on track , if you opened the Tempest and 190 boxes at the same time and built one with the right hand and the other with the left . Probably end up with a Sea Fury as previously mentioned😬

  7. Hi there, Being in the western part of Canada, we don't see many Laser engines. Exchange rate is atrocious CAD to GBP. So it's with great joy and excitement that I just received my order of Laser engines (three Laser 70 - destined for a Mosquito and an undetermined airplane) from the last remaining stock to add to my Laser engine collections. It takes a while (about 3 weeks) for the mail system to deliver them. I now have three Laser 70, two Laser 80, one Laser 120, two Laser 90 and one Laser 300v. All the ones (80s, 90s and 300v) that I run have been extremely reliable and easy to run. They are exceptional engines and I wish I could get more. A big shout out to Jon for his past support and knowledge. Thanks Fred

  8. toto Much of the weather problem when learning to fly is the need for the right weather on the right day. I remember the frustration learning to fly full size gliders. Although they of course were dual dual control so the actual flying bit once in the air was not such a problem but actually doing the take and landing was weather dependent and it is the take off (aero tow) and the landing that needs the most practise. The weather in the UK has always been a frustration to flying.

  11. Back to normal today, wind, rain and now heavy missel. Not much fun being born today. Just a few hours old this calf but mum is doing a good job feeding and now tucked into hedge for a kip.

  13. Just gagging to fly today given the recent poor weather conditions. I was greeted at the strip by sparking sunshine and a nice steady 7-8mph SSW breeze. You can't wish for anything better so on with my varifocal over shades and off we go. When I was clearing up one of the full size flying boys came across for a chat. This time of year it's the RV8 MOT and service. Apparently, apart from the weather, they are grounded because of the delay in spares being delivered. Something that has never happened before. Their bad luck is my gain in the short term I guess. 😀

  15. Myst have rained heavily overnight as there are lots of puddles on the road.... Although we've never had a noise complaint, I have a self-imposed rule of nothing noisy (ic, Zago, old edf) before 10:00, so snuck put for somw leccy fun. Too windy for my little PZ SE5, runway too bumpy for my Sea Fury..... out with the Hawk that ignores wind! Well, to an extent. Doesn't look too dirty with my phone camera.

  16. Quite correct! In AA sizes, anything over 2000mAH is pushing your luck! You will be much better off sticking with 2000mAH rather than going for the higher capacity. 2000mAH is quite adequate for most of our applications. Don't get fooled by "the bigger the number, the better" syndrome. It ain't necessarily so! I've never had an issue with genuine 2000mAH Eneloops. My personal experience with Vapex has been mixed... -- Pete

  18. All of the small additions from the prototype have been recorded in the files for cutting the kits . Phill the Kit cutter is grumbling about having to actually make some , but that is entirely normal . Green Graham has been finishing off the drawing so we are very close now . I might do two batches in a series of say two weeks . Ideally those that are actually going to lead the charge and are ready to start , could you please pm me . Those that are happy to watch the other get a couple of weeks head start , sit on your hands . Here are a couple of pictures of the great Guru in action . Its not all work though .

  19. With Nimh cells i have found that anything above 2000mah capacity are more prone to failure and drop their voltage drastically under load as IR increases. I lost a good model sone time ago when a cell in a 6v 2700mah pack packed up. When checked the pack showed 6.3 v but as soon as any load was put on it the voltage dropped to zero ! Just one cell cost a lot of grief .Up to 2000 mah they seem fine. I now only use the ready charged or LSD type as they seem even more robust than the standard type.

  21. When you start out with electric limited flight time seems to be a constant problem. As you progress with more capable planes with a longer potential duration you find what you want to do in the course of the flight is more important than the maximum possible flight time. I suffered from exactly the "duration" problem when I started out in electric where 3 minutes was likely the best flight time for a simple plane. My interest in structures and aerodynamics prompted me to do something about it. Improvement in wing aerodynamic efficiency and weight reduction more than doubled the duration of the same basic plane to 8 minutes, mostly due to the reduced throttle required to simply stay up. The full power duration was little changed. I carried on with this theme with several versions of an improved lighter airframe, more efficient motor and prop with of course a bigger battery. Although keeping to the same span as the original plane a cruise duration of an hour was achieved then a theoretical 2 hours and finally this plane which has a potential "power on" cruise duration of nearly 4 hours. It has a 1200mm (47") span and it weighs 436g (15.4oz) with a 3800mAh 2s. Its maximum duration was never tested as after 2 hours on a flat site I gave up from boredom and a stiff neck. Maybe it ended up to be a rather pointless exercise however I do still fly it on calmer days safe in the knowledge that the one thing I do not have to worry about is how long it has been in the air.😉

  22. I may do the same. Everything is just taped up temporarily at the moment, and I’m going for cartoon scale only. I’ll try another balsa bird when I’m ready to do something fancy again! This build is only intended to have a short lifespan, as I may need the motor for something else if the Warbird Replicas factory puts another shift in…

  23. Kilner jar is just for the bulb so I don’t get my mucky paws on it and will be left slightly ajar when the bulb is lit.Lipo is kept separate but on a metal baking tray when in the garden away from any flammable material such as the garden fence!

  27. It is in a Hirobo Bell 47 helicopter (an early Mk 1). On the AA cells it couldn't get off the ground! The engine sounded fine, no misfires or anything, just a severe lack of power. It would get light on the skids, and you might see daylight under them momentarily, but it certainly wouldn't "fly". Switching to sub-C cells restored normal power. It would lift off, hover and fly round with no problems. To be fair, it is NOT over-powered! But neither is the full-size one! It does force me to fly it in a realistic manner! 🤣 -- Pete

  28. Run four tanks through the the engine this morning after changing the prop to a14x6 MAS and the fuel for some D2000 (had been using D1000) the 14" proving more suitable than the 16' wood that I used for one run.

  36. As you know , we are trying a new decal provider for the 190 and Tempest . I have to say that I'm very impressed . The colours and pre cutting are very good and I particularly like the "sky " coloured squadron codes . I am going to get them to include an extra strip of sky to do the rear fuselage band in your version of the decals . Looks like I'll be painting mine though ... My models get a hard time so in an extra effort to make sure my decals stay on and wrinkle free I have opted to make the surface adhesion as good as I possibly can . These decals are sticky , and if you stuck one on glass , it would not come off . But if you stuck it on your jeans it definitely would . Our matt emulsion is somewhere in between . So Ive rubbed down the area where the decals will locate with very fine wet and dry (used dry ) , then wiped with a damp cloth . Dont worry if it takes some of the paint off , it adds to the overall effect . Next , I brushed on a thin coat of PVA glue but only where the transfers will go . I left it for an hour to dry and go clear , then gave a quick wipe with the fine paper again . It felt glassy at this point , as I had hoped . The Decals went on nicely and they feel rock solid . If I do get any "lift " on a hot day , I can put a sock on my small iron and iron them back down as the PVA will reactivate with heat . The "R B " and fuselage roundel come on a transparent carrier film , which is excellent because if you line up the straight backs of the R and B with the black and white stripes , you cant go wrong . Easy Peasy !

  38. Steve Webb tells a great story of a punter who phoned the shop as he was unable to get his engine started. Steve talked the guy through all the obvious step - fuel, air, glow etc and could hear the sound of a prop being flipped in the background. Eventually he heard the engine burst into life, followed shortly by "Oooh, ouch, ouch, ouch" then a clatter and the engine noise stopped. Steve asked the guy if he'd started the engine in his hand - which he had. It then turned out that he was in a phone box! 😮

The water is probably going a greeny colour because the terminal tabs are being dissolved by electrolytic corrosion, which makes it quite likely that they are not dead at all, but because the tabs have gone and the connections to the power and balance leads have gone, it can be almost impossible to check the state of charge.

It's also the salt in solution which permits the electrolytic corrosion of the battery terminal tabs, potentially leaving the lipo not fully discharged, but with the connections through which the individual cell voltage could be monitored essentially all but gone, which is a far from ideal situation. This method of discharging lipos has been completely discredited and should not be followed..

A cNot had a great deal of spare time but have made a bit of progress on the second Speary although I needed to do some reworking in order to correct a mistake I made and one made previously by the guy that I bought the casting sets from. so wot happened was,I screwed the rear cover in and it got stuck, like proper stuck so I had to machine the hole thing out and then repair the damaged threads and the previous mistake by welding Once squared up I cut the recess and then brought it out to size and re-cut the thread ,then too take an actual step forward, soldered the intake and transfer on also found time to fixthe broken and missing timer arm on the Ok super 60

  42. I was working and living in digs 120 miles from home when I was 17 in 1957 without any adult supervision at all. What little money I had was spent on my motorcycle (an old BSA C11 250cc ohv) and that wasn't much. Perhaps it was the lack of cash that kept me on the straight and narrow! I didn't feel deprived because we were all in the same boat. I wasn't officially an adult and able to vote until 21. I used to go to motor-cycle shows and events back in the 50s and 60s when they were packed and was a club member for years organising and competing in trials etc. I think, starting aeromodelling in the early/mid 1990s after I retired early, I caught the start of the decline. As a child, I and most of my friends made things from pram-wheeled wagons to model railway bits or 'phones' using ex-WD earphones and throat mikes, as well as the odd aeroplane. The problem is, now youngsters don't need to make anything - it's as easy to buy. Not their fault - it just is.

  44. I really don't understand why people are so derogatory about elements of the hobby that don't "float their boat"...... we have enough challenges already. That 'toy helicopter' may start someone's journey to a large turbine powered helicopter.... Many members of my club were introduced to the hobby by 'foamies', and continue to enjoy them.... There are certainly planes accessible to all now that would never have been dreamed of 15 years ago, and that would not be available in other materials. If it flies, and it makes its owner happy, it's a winner in my book. (I fly ic and electric. I have helicopters, multi-rotors and planes. I have foamies and crunchies. I have had mouldies. I fly indoors and out. I welcome anyone to this great hobby, whatever they choose to fly, or read about)

With the arrival of the film from HK I was able to finish the covering, followed by the application of the registration lettering courtesy of my Silhouette vinyl cutter: Followed by glueing in the struts to the hard points: Windscreen was fabricated from 0.5mm PETG fixed with UHU Por and silicone sealant and silver metallic vinyl film applied to simulate the aluminium support. Which, apart from radio setup, completes the build: AUW 2.2Kg (or 4.85lbs in old money), she balances easily without any lead and with room for adjustment on the battery if needs be. Maiden flight probably won't be until the spring. Thanks to PM, she was a joy to build and I'm sure will be just as enjoyable to fly - looking forward to some low and slow flypasts!
