Richard Acland
Decided that as I am self isolating because of my age this would be an ideal opportunity between all the other jobs to do a bit of building. I have had a plan for a Stolp Starlet that I have been wanting to do for some time. I ordered a load of balsa and other stuff from The Balsa Cabin online and rang to pay for it this morning. They said things have gone manic order wise. It would appear a lot of us have taken this as a building opportunity. Its an ill wind that blows no one any good. ron evans
After our club shut up shop ( how are you Dai ), I've been watching more tv than usual (I know I should be building). A few days ago I switched over to "Coast" and they were doing a piece on the Mosquito. It seems that when the Atlantic convoy losses were high, they were concerned that a shortage of balsa wood would effect Mosquito production. There was no other substitute at the time, so a German born scientist (can't remember his name), set about creating one. He came up with a substitute with all the strength and characteristics of balsa, which was approved by DH, made out of sea weed. The presenters on the show tried to make some, but ended up with a soggy pancake. They did show the only remaining sample that looked like a block of EPS. Thankfully the convoys were eventually arriving safely and the seaweed balsa was never needed.
john davidson 1
I use a spray called FIRST DEFENCE as soon as I feel a cold coming on and it very effective in preventing the cold progressing further. It is a plant extract and works by coating nose and throat mucous surfaces. Wonder if this would work with covid virus as wel as the cold virus
cymaz
Had one day of isolation. Back to work tomorrow. Apparently Cornwall is crying out for cement and drainage pipe, off to spread the joy Edited By cymaz on 24/03/2020 18:52:
Martin McIntosh
Just had a mail from my club stating that flying is now banned. Bit of a knee jerk reaction considering that in a wide open space we would not exactly be huddled together. Half way through a TN Provost which I thought would keep me busy until better weather came along. Don`t want any more bloody models since I now have at least eight awaiting a test flight! Don`t tell me to clear the shed because the last time I did that and had a clean bench top I filled it with the above.
Erfolg
It is the same issues that sport fishermen, golfers face, essentially alone, at above 3m apart. The issue is a government directive, driven by far to many people being irresponsible, with no concern to their responsibilities to the wider communities. Based on the PMs announcement last night it is pretty clear going out to a flying field is no longer a legal activity, so I don’t think your committee can really be criticised. Erfolg
Having read your post Ken. Something similar is happening here. There is a road that runs adjoining the coast that is the beach or dunes. It has car parking lane along one side (adjacent to the beach). Normally it is has a lot of cars and campers parked along it. Yesterday I noticed that one very large camper that had been parked up since Christmas has gone. Also that on a 2 mile walk along the footpath, we saw perhaps 10-20 cars in total. Mainly had old (even older than me) people sitting in them. There was one police car parked up on the opposite side of the road, with a policeman sitting in it. A police car occasionally driving past. This stretch of the road is perhaps 6 miles long. I have never in recent years seen a police car, nor policeman. Dis not know we had so many. Dai Fledermaus
Since our club field closed, ( keep safe Ron ) my wife has started to menace me with a very large and unpleasant looking tin of emulsion paint. Could this be construed as domestic abuse? 😉

Bob Cotsford
Having had fun cutting the lawn I can't help wondering how high the grass will be at the field when we finally get out there, and just how badly seized up the 3 gang mower will be. john stones 1 - Moderator
Some of our members have been "Self isolating" for years when there's work to be done. Council cuts ours, but that's on hold for now, will be rows of cut grass laid down when it gets done.
Erfolg
Yep, I cut the grass front and back last week, did a bit of this and that, filled our green bin completely. Self Isolating means that an important task, of buying plants and bulbs, at Aldi and the local Garden Centre is not happening. Being the worlds most useless and uninformed Gardner has had me turning to this site for information and identification of plants. Most days I am heart broken, as more often than not on our permitted daily walk, we pass my favorite pub by the sea. There are at least three aspects that I am missing, the first is that there are no tourists to rail about, cluttering up the outside seating area, in good weather, filling the internal areas in poor weather. I miss looking out over the sea, pint in hand. Yesterday something else suddenly came into my mind. There has not been the roar of jet engines, mostly from Typhoons. Nor the sight of any Hawks returning at low level over the sea, when an east wind is prevalent. I find this disquieting as these sounds, are the sound of prosperity in this neck of the woods. As we walked towards the windmill, I mentioned that it was from somewhere, just here that the second aircraft built by English Electric (EE) flew from. Hmm, it was either from here, or in the vicinity, said the wife. Yes, of course you are correct., I squirmed. It seems that there was, a pier or jetty here, for Liverpool holiday ferries here in the 20s. Apparently the aircraft was built in Preston, then being a sea plane, the trials took place here. It hit some debris in the water and at least partially sunk. Hmm very interesting, anyway, how do yo know, I know you are very old, but even your memory does not go so far back. Ah, the BAC historian/PR man told me at the Lytham 40s weekend, in their pavilion. One more wistful glance at the pub (Queens) as we walked back home past the Lifeboat station and Yacht club, looking out over the shimmering sand, wondering, where is the sea? David Davis
Got an email from our club president yesterday stating that the current restrictions on meeting at our flying field and workshop will continue until 15th April. I presume that the French government has extended the previous lockdown arrangements; social distancing, staying at home etc. Meanwhile two of our members have taken the time to build a couple of biplanes. They will be just the job to escort my BE2e once they're finished!
wingcoax
Erf, I know you are on the Fylde, Do you (when you can) fly near to the army camp? Are you still bothered by the occasional low(very)Cherokee?
Erfolg
I have seen it, it tends to give us a little distance. There is an other attribute, that provides more than a hint, it is about, that is the very distinctive, whomp, whomp, beat of the blades. I think that the army camp might be used as a sighting device for some light aircraft, that from time to time come over, a bit lower than i am used to. This is very different to Altrincham, where aircraft out of Ringway (Manchester International Airport) used to pass over at a good few thousand feet (phone app figures), over our fields there. Even though they were just about the same distance as Blackpool Airport is from us here. I am guessing you have flown with us (i have only been there for 3 years). One aspect of the site which has surprised me, it is always windy, or so it seems. Also being an ex gilder guider, I was well used to flying in winds of up to 20 mph. I can barely manage perhaps 15 mph there, as the wind also seems to be far more turbulent. With the suspension of flying, I or we are planning more walks along the coast, and I have my eye on a cycle onto the moss at the back of Lytham St Annes (all pretty much dirt track, single file lanes). Mainly because it is all unknown to me. Today we walked to the St Annes lifeboat station and read on a notice board about the greatest Lifeboat Service loss of life to-date, when the Southport and Sta Annes life boats overturned, with only two of the Southport crew surviving. Come on, what are the rest of you all doing?
Mark Kettle 1
I tidied the shed, took off and rubbed down, sprayed a radiator with white paint, then combined a 3 mile walk with shopping trip for washing powder ( see the bump in the red line between 2 & 3 mile mark) that was the shop. John Privett
Posted by Erfolg on 31/03/2020 19:54:07: Come on, what are the rest of you all doing? I've been working from home for the past week or two (actually 2 weeks exactly) working longer hours than I normally would as the "commute" at each end of the day is so much shorter! And then for the last week I've gone out at the end of each working day for a cycle ride of 30 mins to an hour. I'm certainly getting more exercise than I used to - not a bad thing either! It's very noticeable how many other people there are (all at > 2 metres distance!) also cycling, or running. And nearly all of them, just like me, quite clearly would not normally have been out cycling or running.
