When I was a child it was sold as a tonic for recovering from illness with the slogan "Lucozade, aids recovery" which was fine until the early 1980s when HIV appeared on the scene and "Aids recovery" suddenly became an unrealistic claim. So the brand positioning was changed to that of a sports drink which it still is today. I remember my mother prescribing Lucozade to me when I had an upset stomach back in the 1970s. When she took me to the doctor (in the days when you could get to see one at short notice), he said that actually if you have an upset tummy the best thing you can do is just drink your usual tap water. dave windymiller
Lucozade "Gives you energy" translates to "loads of calories" which doesnt sell it so well! "Sports drink" is ok though!
kevin b
And I can remember when you had to take a wheel barrow to the shop in order to carry home a Mars Bar, they were that big !
J D 8
There was a time when a "sports" drink was a glass of milk, and I recon better for you than all the fizzy sugary stuff about today. In the early 80's the football league cup was known as THE MILK CUP as the sponsor was the Milk Marketing Board.

Very true do you remember the 1/3 rd pint of milk you got at school each day before Margaret Thatcher stopped it, we still get through 40 pints of milk a week between the 3 of us.

Of course the FA cup will never be able to get a sponsor 😉

Martin Harris - Moderator
Not only was a Mars Bar a large lump but it was a challenge to bite into. Sometime in the 70s (by my recollection) they changed the formulation to have much less dense filling and softer caramel. Dumbed down for the dentally deficient?

Zflyer
If you grew up in the 70's Champion the Wonder Horse was already in the archives, 1950's program, along with Lassie, Gunsmoke and if anyone remembers Dan Troop of Lawman Fame. Ah bliss, ice on the inside of the windows, coal fires, gas pokers yes those were the days, a mills diesel started in my bedroom having been bolted to the chest of draws, the resulting sore backside. I digress back to the funnies 1
