  1. Its all about creating a model that looks far more detailed than it really is . That suits these two entry level kits because they are supposed to be quick build, no fuss models , but that doesn't mean they have to look ordinary . Im still waiting for exhaust stacks before I call it a day . Also got to give the rudder an impression of fabric covering .

  3. Have a reply from the BMFA and Andy was a great help .It is going to be sorted now .The Flying Club Committee are on safety grounds going to enforce no flying on Kart racing days and thosee members that do not like that will be told maybe they should find a different club to fly at We might lose a few members but at least we will still have a flying club

  4. Some photos just edited from our first PSSA event of 2024 this weekend (13/14th April) upon The Great Orme, Llandudno. High strength SW winds resulted in a lot of good flying over the two days and a big attendance as always after the Winter break. Link embedded in the image.

  5. Nooooooooo. Toto has already had bad experiences with ic - the last thing he needs us to bolt his unfamiliar engine to a bench, and 'see how he gets on'. He has no real experience of starting, running in, or adjusting such an engine. And, in fact, is a way off being able to fly the model in question. His highest chance of avoiding more disappointment (when toto can fly such a model safely) has to be to mount it into his model, take it to the flying field, get his petrol-experienced chum to check it out, then work together to start it, run it in, and make any adjustments. Hopefully, it's staying in its box for a while. Other opinions are, obviously, available.

  6. So much more fun if there are 2 of you trying to fly formation. Challenging but that's why we like it.

  8. Think that is the route we will have to go down.Trying to please everyone does not work .I have emailed every members saying if we fly on kart racing days we will lose the flying field Most member now realise.that now and are coming round that it is better to lose 10 weekends a year then 52 weekends a year A few member are still insisting they want to fly on kart racing weekends but they will be told to find a different club to fly at

  13. Evening all, You've probably all seen today's email reminder from fantasygp, pointing out the changed format of Sprint weekends this season. But in case anyone hasn't seen it yet, here are the relevant details; The F1 season continues this weekend and it's time to get ready for the Fantasy GP of China - it's also the first SPRINT weekend of the season. Note that the Sprint weekend format has changed a bit for 2024 - Friday has the practice session and then qualifying for the Sprint. Saturday is the Sprint Race and then the qualifying for the Grand Prix. Sunday is of course, the Grand Prix itself. The game will lock when Sprint Qualifying begins on Friday, see timings below. Make sure you're happy with your team and predictions before the game closes at the start of qualifying! Here are all the important timings for the weekend, all timings in BST (GMT+1). - Friday: 4:30am Free Practice & 8.30am SPRINT Qualifying (GAME LOCKS) - Saturday: 4am SPRINT race, 8am Grand Prix Qualifying - Sunday: 8am Race Start Get your team ready before FRIDAY 8:30am BST (GMT+1) So - my summary - don't wait until Friday to do your predictions - as after 8:30am you'll be too late! I've done mine already, and there's a slim chance I might get a quick look at the P1 results (Friday 4:30am!) and amend the predictions before heading off to work. (I did say, a "slim chance"!)

  14. If the clus rules are NO FLYING while karting is going on then thats the club rules and members should adhere to the rules at all times and they cannot or shud I say should not feel they have the right to ignore them as they see fit,,, Nor can they over rule the committee..... What they can do is ask for the rules to be chaged either at the AGM at the end of the club year or ask for an EGM to be called which it will then be put to a club vote which if the club as a whole decide to keep the rules as they are including any/all no flying at stated times then the rebelious members basicly have 2 choices,,,, Accept the club rules as they are and follow them or go find another club or failing that face the the consiquences of breaking the rules and being kicked out the club specially when it comes to the safety of others A blunt answer im sure but a correct one i feel

  15. yep it will be fine Tank in the right place, OS f plug, correct prop for model (what is it?) With that sorted, start it, tune it, fly it. Repeat until tired, go home, crack open a beer (or beverage of your choice) and reflect on your day of flying. Hopefully the engine is in decent mechanical condition. I would recommend you whip the front housing off the engine and take peek inside before you run it. If its rusty or otherwise not nice change the bearings etc and then go from there.

  16. Update ..... Just touched base with my mentor ...... flying off for this weekend as there is a motorcycle race on ....... booooooooo. But ..... hang on ..... on another much cheerier note ...... we discussed my progress and he reckons ...... I only have some circles, procedure turns and aborted landings to master and I shall more or less be ready to fly solo. I have already done some procedural turns so not to concerned about that. My aborted landings will be taken care of in my next lesson as I am now achieving actual landings. Things could progress faster than anticipated. I am also going to get him to put me into some " awkward " attitudes and let me work my way out of them. ( hopefully ) as you never know when you are going to foul up. The focus is on not panicking and achieving a recovery. So ..... looks like the weekend after next ..... I'm buzzing and can't wait ...... where are my incontinence pads. ..... Toto

  17. Is it not the "pilot" of an RC plane (UAV) who is responsible for its safe operation? For most clubs the CAA recognise it is unlikely a club could meet the full responsibilities as the "operator". From the CAA Introduction to drone flying and the UK rules. "Since the legal identity of the operator must be clear, organisations or clubs without a formal legal status are unlikely to be able to meet the operator requirements." If this is the case it follows that the legal responsibility for a flight lies with the UAV pilot unless he is a minor in which case the responsibility is the registered "operator" of the UAV. It will be interesting to see what is the BMFA view.

  19. The next bit (and this is fun ) is creating and the metallic look where the paint has "worn through " . You can do this with silver paint and a brush but done very dry . However , I prefer the silver shaker pens and a finger . You can dot random little blobs on and quickly wipe them in the direction of airflow . If you cock it up , just paint the base colour over it . I like mine a bit over the top , but you can decide when to stop .

  20. Nearly all of my models are powered by four-stroke engines. I have a Magnum 52 and a Thunder Tiger 54 in my Barons and I've found that they do not leave a great deal of oil on the model after a day's flying. A squirt of household cleaner and a swift wipe down with a rag and that's it. I have an old Laser 62 in a Big Guff vintage model. I run this engine on fuel containing 15% oil and I have an extension tube on the silencer which terminates just below the bottom of the fuselage. Some oil is left on the forward underside of the fuselage after a day's flying but otherwise its fine. I use a more modern Laser 80 in a large ARTF clone of the SIG Kadet Senior. I run this engine on the new fuel which contains 7% oil. This hardly leaves any oil on the model at all. My experience leads me to the belief that four-strokes burn the fuel more efficiently and therefore there is less mess to clean up at the end of the day. Not that I mind getting my hands dirty anyway! šŸ˜‰ This view is reinforced if I ever have to drag out the club's Boomerang trainer currently powered by an Enya 50. This engine being a two stroke leaves the side of the model covered in unburnt oil. Finally, and as a rule of thumb, if your Laser has a vertical glow plug, it's alright to run it on the new 7% fuel. If it has a forward facing glow plug, I'd be inclined to use a fuel containing 15% oil.

  22. If you read totos other thread (First taste of the sky), you'll see he has received lots and lots of advice - often incorrect, misleading, or contradictory. None of it resulted in a satisfactory ic experience........... any advice or comment I give is based on his past experience, and trying to minimise the risk of further disappointment. I'll make no further comment on this topic.

  23. Someone who already had a house said ..... "come and see my current house, I've had loads; I'll help you upgrade your cave safely, and help you understand how a house works" Much better than the family in the next cave, who decided to have a go at building a house on their own. Because they had no experience, they didn't know what was required. It fell down in a storm and injured them. They decided houses are horrible, complicated things, so they still live In a cave.

  27. I'll go along with a Mossie (can never have to many Spitfires Mossies. Either built, unbuilt or needs rebuilding I can can count 5, but half a dozen sounds like a round number to me! Just an observation, but with all the Mossies getting the C of G forward enough is always a challenge. One BH Mossie I bought has larger than required motors, but the correct props, clever as the additional motor weight is about as far forward as possible bearing in mind the 4S5000 lipo is in the nose already (so you can't do a bomber version). All eth servos are very near C of G. Even putting lipos in the nacelles may be a challenge if UC is used. My SG Mossie has 2 Laser 70's, everything else as far forward + extra weight up front to get the C of G and looking at the electric versions the lipo packs are well forward in the fuz. Not sure that's a good place to put a lot of weight if a hard landing takes place as it might break its back. I an sure Richard can iron these challenges out as he has in the past with his other twins šŸ™‚ ...should he accept the challange!

  29. It is the pilot's responsibility to ensure any flight can be undertaken safely. If it all goes wrong, the individual pilot will in the spotlight. However, if there is a serious accident, it won't do the entire club any favours.

  30. It is each flierā€™s responsibility to ensure that he or she flies safely. In the scenario presented, it would probably be the flier whose model was involved in the incident who would be liable, not the club itself, though it wouldnā€™t bode well for the continued existence of the club at that location. If your club is BMFA affiliated (and keeps that affiliation up to date annually) then the BMFA insurance indemnified the clubā€™s committee members against any claim. Regarding the dual use of the airfield, whether both model flying and kart racing can operate simultaneously would depend on the proximity of each activity. The BMFA should be able to provide advice on all aspects of this. Brian.

  31. Hmmm, I can see Daiseys (in English), see Iso Freight Containers, where are the roses and castle or is it town? I guess you are by the side of a river, the Rhine, perhaps the Amstel, these are the only rivers I know, as being in the Netherlands. Oh, to be well travelled, I did once take the Rhinegold from Rotterdam to Koln once, does it count, taxied for hours at Skipol (I thought is this how we are getting to Manchester, is the North sea a problem (is there a tunnel, I pondered). Any way, we seem to all be discussing the weather, what has passed, and what is comingšŸ˜¢. Here on the Fylde, the very strong winds, and tide, drove the waves right up to the sand dunes. As for our flying field, I have not gone near it now for two or more weeks, due to the wind and rain. Another good reason, is the last time I was there, the wheel arches of my car were pretty much filled with mud, it took a 120 mile round trip, in appalling rain, for it to be washed away. It did save me getting the hose pipe and jet wash out. The golf course (a links) next to me, had a number of golfers out on it this morning, although bitterly cold, and a strong northly wind. My wife's club still closed for play, as it is on clay, on a flood plane. I will provide further run downs on the weatheršŸ™„. In the meantime I am assembling and readying my and launch models, as I am guessing the grass will be rather long, and getting the mower, to do its thing, without leaving furrows could be a long time coming. šŸ˜¢

  36. Been asked how I made the socks and why? I will respond to the former and leave the latter .... I used some thin aluminium sheet, 0.6mm aircraft grade, but it was an off cut. Made some templates up in Autocad, which apparently look like fox heads. Cutting out the templates was a faff but bending them into shape was easier than expected. The joint was placed alternately fwd and aft, dependant on the location of the sock. Fwd on the lower strut, aft on the upper strut. Pictured is an empty sock.

  40. Itā€™s worth flashing those X series receivers with the UNI firmware. Do them all, then send a list of the codes generated in the Activate LUA script to either T9 or Aloft Hobbies and they will send you back a list of activation code. From my experience, that has usually been within one working day. Brian.

  44. Just a quick mention- Iā€™m not a ā€˜builderā€™ - prior to this Iā€™ve only built a galaxy models magician, top flite sea fury and dabbled with a Brian Taylor mosquito (gave up on that as too complicated at the time!). just want to show folk that with a bit of patience itā€™s possible to build something from a plan that even an inexperienced builder can be proud of. It may not win any awards at the nationals but Iā€™m happy with itā€¦ I really like the brown paper method of covering - paper and all paints used (grey/blue/black/white) will have come to about Ā£15 so it doesnā€™t break the bank!
