Never mind the weather - who has been flying, then?

Yet another nice evening here in South Gloucestershire. Spent the afternoon cutting our strip with my mate and the sit on mower. Took my Precedent Stamp for a couple of flights afterwards. At a rough estimate I reckon I built it 25 odd years ago. Powered adequately by an SC 90 FS.For some reason it has always needed a load of down elevator trim and on take off always swings to the left unless I open the throttle slowly. Still looks nice in the air though.20240801_174744.thumb.jpg.eeb5bdce7e13d259e333713f08d336a3.jpg20240801_174725.thumb.jpg.125943e6ee1eede1d2000c29169e68f4.jpg

My Stampe also needs a lot of down elevator to gly level.  I don't know if the full size Stampe has the same problem but otherwise I think the tail plane is set at the wrong angle.  It probably needed the tail  plane to be mounted with about a 2 deg incidence to decrease the amount of down elevator needed.  Note there will still need to be a down force exerted by the TP in level flight.

My good pal Derek has come up with the goods from Wednesday's flying, so here's a small selection of pictures of what I was flying.

First the Kyosho Spitfire - yes, she's very much stand off scale and those wide spaced wheels are an abomination, but she flew so beautifully and I think that even with the slab sides this looks a picture in the air - Derek captured the collapse of the retracts in a wheeler landing quite magnificently. They're gone, but the Spitfire will fly again.

Next is my Go-Jet, which had only had one flight prior to this ending in the Go Jet Going In vertically and burying her nose as far as the leading edge in the soft ground. No such problem this time, once the upwards hand launch was perfected and the Go Jet grooved around quite convincingly.

Inspired by the performance of the wee ACT Komet on Sunday there was an empty space in the car, so my rarely flown Durafly Me163 got a trip to the field and had an enjoyable whizz around the sky. The grass was a little bit too long for the drop off gear, but she went fine from a hand launch.

Finally, I'm made up with this sequence of pictures Derek got of my catastrophic failed take off of my Kyosho P-51D - completely my own fault and hopefully a lesson (re)learned. The piccies capture quite dynamically the cartwheel and carnage. The fuselage is already repaired and I'll splice the replacement wingtip on today so Betty Lee will hopefully get to the air for some higher altitude pictures. Special thanks to Derek for an excellent set of photies.

More of the same again at Epsom Downs Race Course today. Just five of us, but a pair of Top Quarks flew, though not together. My friend Steve built one and I film covered it, tiger style, for him and he installed the gear. I was on the sticks for its maiden, whilst he did the hand launch. His model pulls to the right when power is applied, so the motor mount and bulkhead need looking at as right thrust is not prescribed. Also, to address sloppy elevon linkages, he had put a blob of canopy glue over each z-bend and servo arm 🤔 This played havoc with the trimming around neutral due to hysteresis from the resistance to movement. He also hadn't dialled in the prescribed 70% expo on pitch. The upshot of all this being the model was all over the shop, especially in pitch. The canopy glue was removed and the expo added, so the second flight was much better. Still some work to do to get it right.

Finally! Started my summer flying season, three months after my last flying day.

Shifty wind, rusty thumbs and some minor set-up changes meant only two flights on the uggliest Acrowot XL in existence, before I caught the long grass and broke the rudder. A few drops of CA will have it sorted.

Took the Junior 60 for a change, and a check over prior to our annual camping trip to Buckminster at the end of the month. The youngest had a quick go on the buddy box, but the eldest wasn't in the mood today.

Crossed over with two other club members, but had the field to myself most of the afternoon.

Blowy and drizzly here this afternoon, but had an hour down the field and a couple of sorties with the wee Volantex Me109, jousting with a Spitfire. Had taken another couple of models but they stayed in the car, then the rain came.

However I was also persuaded (again) to bring an orphaned vintage glider home, to team up again with the Mini Phase from last week. A very similar overall shape and construction, but this one had a removable nose and was kitted out with an integral tin fuel tank, to take an engine on the front. No idea what is is, but will put a picture up on the vintage forum and see if anyone recognises it.

Breezy, and in random directions today... but had a couple of flights on the DT after some tall grass strimming.

In the last 12 months, I have taken 8 OS engines out of the box, bolted them to models, started them, and run them on with just the tiniest tweak of the lsn. The OS 55 I put in mh DT was absolutely miles too rich.... pretty much sorted now.

Tomorrow will be a day of sorting Gnats out for Raisthorpe Fliers, ahead of our visit North Of The Border.

Simon, the Spit looks like a Ripmax version...which is hand launch...so why has it got a tail wheel? Fitted with retracts...looks like a winter mod for me!

PS cracking phots there.

Another week, another lovely nostalgia project in sunny North Yorkshire. Refit on the Puppeteer over the last week. Mods to fit the OS56 and ensure airworthiness in a few areas, but such a lovely model still.  Run-in and setup complete last night and then a nice few flights with fellow club member Jonathan and his electric version. Sweet. At this rate I’ll have these for Best of British, along with the Wot4, in September.

Cross wind on the strip today that proved a challenge due to its blustery nature. P38 provided a couple on nicely locked in flights, plus some nice slow low passes with the OV10.

Six club members provided near continues flying with just the departure and return of one, full size (nice to see them working the stick with the cross wind!

I would say I'm still a relative novice when it comes to RC, having done most of my flying using the Eachine/Volantex micro warbirds, but lately I've been doing a fair bit of flying with my 85%-sized FT Spitfire.  It flies great, considering I didn't think it would!  I'm averaging flight times around the 7-minute mark on a 2200mAh 3S.  I'm teaching myself aerobatics which, thus far, has gone OK!

Nice looking day today. Windsock shows signs of life........

IMG_1977.jpg.8aa797a29f8b9dadbbcd64eb977973fd.jpg

Upon checking the wind, it was blowing around 10mph straight down the strip so time to get the heavy mob out to fly!

I decided on my 91" Slick powered by a Dualsky GA8000 which is equivalent to 80-120cc I/C. The motor hauls this beast around very well and as horses for courses goes she is the goto plane on a windyish day.

All good to go. She holds the wind extremely well and the breeze also assists with landings no end.

I gave her a good wringing out and as I may have mentioned before she flat spins inverted much better than upright. No less fun though. A great morning's enjoyment. The one thing I am going to do is change the 3"+ foam wheels with a more robust variety as they can't handle  the landings for many flights mainly due to the plane's weight. I am sure my inconsistent technique doesn't help either! ☹️

My 900gm foamie veloxity is regularly flown in 15 to 20 mph winds.

If I had a plane that size I'd hope it would fly in 30+ mph winds.

Well good for you, Learner. Whilst the Slick would I am sure fly in stronger winds I prefer to enjoy  some precision flying and not fight with the elements too much. Each to their own of course.
