Swans.

Swarms of the ...!

They have been inhabiting the barley field next to the house for nearly a week now. Started off with about a dozen, then growing in numbers, counted 36 in the field yesterday and they are feeding on the spilled barley from the autumn harvest, working their way across the field and getting closer to the house. There's a flooded part in the dip in the field so they can have a paddle and feast on the invertebrates brought out in that wet bit.

Hadn't actually seen any in flight until this morning as we were having breakfast when my wife - a veteran of many hundreds of viewings of Battle of Britain and so very well trained -shouted "11 o-clock!" and there they were, about ten of them, gear down, full flaps and making a curved approach to land in the field. The light hasn't been great for photographs and its a big field, so it's only as they have got closer to the house that they are getting into range for a decent picture or two. Hope to catch the whole squadron taking off or landing, if I'm lucky.

For us, the many crows are Stukas, pigeons are Mosquitoes, swallows are Spitfires,  the vast formations of geese are 'einkels and there was much discussion on what swans are - the conclusion my pal Bob suggested was Sunderlands and I think that fits perfectly.

Although a few weeks back, afternoon/one evening many thousands of Geese flew over our house, to the reed beds on the south side of the Ribble, now I suspect most have moved on. Why, do i think this? Most years I have seen groups of hundreds flying locally during the day, generally a bit lower, manly it is there direction of flight.

So far this year I have seen or heard perhaps two groups.

This Kent Air Ambulance AW169 circled over my house today while I was working in the garden. It landed on the Woldingham village green about 200 metres from my house. Apparently picking up an accident victim at a 4 house building development in the village. Someone fell off scaffolding like I did 9 years ago. Nice heli.

Once a year during the festival the red arrows fly almost directly over our house (maybe a hundred meters off) on the way to Edinburgh castle.

they start the smoke pretty much bang on above us, I know this as I always forget and hear it and by the time I’m in my garden that’s all I see. Have never seen them yet. It’s been four years

Snoozing is part of the landscape when dadding.

this year the boy is old enough not to forgive me for at least a day or two so need to prep.

A pair of Merlin helicopters. They went around several times at a couple of hundred feet  while I was in the back garden cutting the grass this morning, but unfortunately being a dull day my pics were not very good. I live not too far from MOD Abbey Wood (the ministry procurement place in Bristol), and I think they land near there sometimes to show the ministry staff what they’re spending our money on.

Indeed a couple of years ago I was cycling near there, and a military Puma was going in and out of a local playing field giving what appeared to be civilian MOD staff joyrides around the area.

May be an image of 2 people, aircraft and text

Text book forced landing, with what looks like minimal damage. Thankfully no casualties,  but she'll be out of action for a while. Talk at the field a few months back with someone in the business and they observed it was only a matter of time before there was an accident with a paying customer on board and that might change everything in the experience flights world.

An Air Atlantique one came to Sandown in the late 1980's when NDN Aircraft were looking at replacing the engines with P&W PT6 turbines.

I can also remember a Blackburn Beverly coming in regularly in the mid 1960's to Sandown Airport.

Heard him go over, but by the time I got outside with the camera he was disappearing into the murk in the distance. I knew where he was headed, so jumped in the car and grabbed a few snaps. The Spitfire TR9 is back for a few days carrying those lucky fare-paying rear seaters. Very murky conditions, but repositioning for his landing gave a decent view of the descent and flare out to land.

Nice! Well captured......

Nothing quite as exotic here - the line surveying heli was at the bottom of the garden yesterday - I knew they were coming as they ring about our NOTAM.  I keep meaning to grab my phone but me and the dogs just run outside excited, like a 10 year old me.

The RAF kept well above our NOTAM but I had the pleasure of three Typhoons (sadly the modern version) playing tig above our house in the afternoon. The game seemed to be for the clean aircraft to catch the one with ordnance on its wings. Lots of impressively tight turns, and enough noise to make the earth shake.

I'm sure I'm not the only one to leave the house as soon as I hear aircraft. Or am I?

Ta - could have done with a slower shutter speed so as not to freeze the prop, but it was very hazy and the blustery wind meant keeping the camera shake down wasn't the easiest job, plus she was a long way away most of the time.
